O:(Pehrson/Hollingsw., 2010)
Group: Herbaceous Hybrid
Bloom period: Early Midseason
Bloom week: 3
Flower form: Bomb
Height: Medium
USDA Zone: 3 to 7
Item number: 1508

Details:

Bomb double flower opens plum red. The color is even throughout and holds its intensity especially if opened as a cut stem. The outer petals form a saucer that holds a large ball of inner petals. These inner segments are relatively long and incurved, creating a silhouette that is as tall as it is wide. The flower is well tailored, of good substance, and of exhibition quality. It is a striking flower and unique among cut flower garden peonies due to its exceptional flower form and color. This peony has a satisfying plant habit, dependable bloom, vigorous, and produces a sizable bush within a few years of planting. Long stems, spreading with open flower requiring mechanical support when to be flowered in the landscape. The foliage is glossy, medium green, the leaflets are quite large. They are distinctly rounded and cupped, of bright green color at flowering, leaf condition may decline upon onset of heat and drought, supplemental irrigation and protection from direct mid-day sun is beneficial. A remarkable peony that makes a great addition to a cut flower garden and furnishes fine stems for the vase.

This plant was produced by Roy Pehrson. Upon the onset of declining health, Roy divested himself of valued peony plants. This is one of the seedlings sent to Chris Laning. Chris later shared divisions with others interested in peony breeding as an example of the flower doubling achievements attainable among the early flowering interspecies hybrids. The name is registered at this time in preparation for further distribution as a cultivar for its unique ornamental qualities, which also enables preservation of its history. The parentage as furnished by Pehrson is [(Lactiflora Group) 'Petite René' x Saunders 8969 (Paeonia officinalis ‘Rosea Plena’ x P. corallina)]. Presumed triploid, stigmas appear normal, but no seeds noted to date.
